Hen Quarter
801 King Street, Alexandria, VA

If you’ve read any of my previous restaurant reviews, you might notice I have a slight obsession with Old Town in Alexandria. There is a restaurant, cafe, and shop on almost every corner. On the corner of King St and S Columbus St sits Hen Quarter, a restaurant serving southern comfort dishes and an extensive list of bourbon!
Hen Quarter is a two-floor rustic space, but although there is plenty of seating, it’s popular in the area so you should definitely make reservations. In only 6 months of its opening, I’m addicted. Although I have yet to visit for dinner, I’ve enjoyed their brunch about 1000 times, and it’s fucking awesome! The menu consists of classic southern brunch dishes like chicken and waffles, sausage biscuits and gravy, green fried tomatoes and more. If you’re just in the mood to taste a few Bourbons, grab a seat at the bar downstairs and enjoy one of their bourbon flights.
If there is one thing that bothers me about Hen Quarter, it’s the unpredictable service. One visit it’s fantastic, the next visit it’s kind of lacking. Clearly, this hasn’t stopped me from visiting, but it’s important to note.
Now on to the more important things:
WHAT TO ORDER
Fried Green Tomatoes
These bad boys were topped with smoked mozzarella and a black-eyed pea salsa.
Sausage, Biscuits, and Gravy
Chicken & Waffles
Fried chicken served with a corn and cheddar waffle. I feel like some people might be weirded out by this waffle, but I loved it!
Sweet and Savory Waffle
Be warned: this is very sweet but delicious.
Biscuits with Honey Pearl Butter and Fig Jam
It’s important to know that if you visit, expect you’ll be rolled out with your pants unbuttoned after you stuff your face with their locally raised fried chicken, biscuits, and cheddar waffles! If you aren’t able to visit its Old Town location, they recently opened in Silver Spring, MD and will be opening a location in the Penn Quarter neighborhood of DC this year!
Grab your leggings or elastic waistband pants and make yo’ reservation today.
